2020 BARC Midlands Centre Sprints
As we headed into the New Year, we’d published the Championship Calendar far earlier than ever before and applied for all our sprint permits. 2020 was shaping up to be a spectacular season, and then everything changed…
Both our new Easter Weekend Sprint at Blyton Park and MotoFest Coventry were lost almost instantly as a result of the permit suspensions announced by Motorsport UK. As many of you will be aware, May saw our governing body issuing ‘Guidance for Venues & Event Organisers’, including specific instructions for Speed events. This resulted in an unprecedented level of communication between organising clubs, venues, competitors and officials as we endeavoured to find solutions for compliance.
Many organising clubs quickly concluded that the scope of additional work required to minimise the level of risk was well beyond what could be achieved by, and expected from, its volunteers. Combined with uncertainty about the availability of medical staff, timekeepers and a range of support services, they took the difficult decision to cancel their remaining events.
Although The Summer Sprint at Curborough initially gained some support, this was well below the level required. So, as has become a familiar story, we are sadly unable to deliver this event. However, BARC Midlands Centre is keen to demonstrate that it remains committed to its competitors, supporters and volunteers. In response, we will be joining the small band of ‘grass root’ clubs who are determined to run at least one event before the year is over!
