Competitor Q&A - Mike Stark

To BARC Midlands Centre, the Championship is as much about keeping our competitors happy as it is about ensuring we continue to deliver excellent events. So, to gauge how we’re getting on, our Championship Press Officer, Kate Neal, caught up with Mike Stark before the 2019 Season to find out a little more about him, his car and his thought on the previous year. Mike first competed in the Championship in 2013. His current car, which he is truly passionate about, has been three years in the build. Here's what he had to say...

Please tell us a little about the history of your car…

My car is a modified Alfa Romeo 156 GTA, which I built over the past few years in partnership with Autolusso – a car servicing and performance centre in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire.

The car started life as the original media car when the Alfa Romeo 156 GTA was launched in 2002, but we’ve now converted it to a modified competition car. After stripping, the shell was acid dipped, seam welded and fitted with an OMP multi-point roll cage.

Following this, the car was prepared for competition, making it as light as possible. This included the fitting of polycarbonate windows, a bespoke wiring loom and a Motec race dash, as well as the modification of pretty much every panel and part.

The car has an Autolusso-Quaife 6-speed sequential gearbox and a 3.2 litre V6 engine, mapped to 330hp via an AEM Infinity ECU. A 3.8 litre V6 engine is also being developed for the car. 2018 was the first year that I’ve competed in it.

Do you have any help getting the car ‘Race Ready’?

Yes, the team at Autolusso give me a lot of help – they’re a great bunch!

What did you enjoy most about 2018?

Simple… driving my new car on track. Having spent three years building it, it’s been great to get it on track. It’s a bit of a handful, but great fun to drive.

If you were permitted a co-driver, who would it be?

Stuart Little, as he wouldn’t add much weight!

Do you have a mascot?

No, just my lucky pants!

What do you plan to do during downtime?

More work on developing the car. We’ve learnt a lot about it this year, so we’ve now got a long list of things that we want to improve.

Do you perform any funny customs before going out on track?

Not that I can think of.
