ROUND 22 - Saturday 8th September 2018
EASTERN CIRCUIT

A very healthy seventeen BARC Connaught Speed Championship competitors travelled to Lincolnshire for our next round and every single one of them got soaked to the skin on Saturday afternoon! Until then we had damp conditions, but during the afternoon, Blyton had more rain than had been seen there in the last eight years.

Did we pack up and go home? Of course not! Pretty much everybody braved the conditions and here’s how it turned out.

Class SB – Standard Saloon & Sports Cars Over 1400cc up to 2000cc saw Steve Riddle in the ClioCup putting his recent track day experience here to good effect with a class win. Steve held off another Clio to record 96.56 seconds.

Class 1A – Road Modified Saloons & Sports Cars up to 1400cc saw a keen battle between Andrew Rollason in the Ford Ka and Mike Edwards British Mini.  Andrew took it with a best of 105.61 seconds to Mike‘s 108.79 seconds. It would be much closer on Sunday!

Class 1B – Road Modified Saloons & Sports Cars Over 1400cc up to & Including 2000cc, had The Flying Espresso Brothers Adrian and Leo Martorana in the Alfa Mito battling it out. This time Adriano took class second on 103.23 seconds with Leo on third with 104.24 seconds.

Class 1C – Road Modified Saloons & Sports Cars Over 2000cc, saw three protagonists battle it out. Paul Jaggard headed this group in his Alfa 147GTA taking second with a 96.68 seconds, followed by Ed McDonough in his Alfa 156 GTA on 102.00 seconds and then Emma Hunt in the Golf on a 104.79 seconds.

Class 2A – Road Going Kit, Replica & Spaceframed Cars up to 1700cc was 100% filled with BARC contenders. Heading this scrabbling pack was Anthony Shearman, who took the class in the Caterham 310R on 98.14 seconds. NSCC man John Clarke was second on 100.99 seconds in his Caterham Seven S3; Paul Webb in his Sylva Stryker was third on 103.71 seconds; Graham Holdstock in his Caterham Seven fourth on 109.32 seconds and Zoe Shearman fifth on 118.84 seconds.

Class 3B – Modified Production Cars Excluding Kit, Replica and Spaceframed Cars Over 1400cc up to & Including 2000cc saw Elen Worthington in the Elise win on a fine 96.67 seconds. Taras Andrusin in the Clio 172 Cup was second on 100.64 seconds.

Class 3C – Modified Production Cars Excluding Kit, Replica and Spaceframed Cars Over 2000cc, had Mike Stark manfully hauling the Alfa 156 GTA around the streaming conditions. Finding the car better around here with the power steering off, Mike took the class on 102.61 seconds.

Finally, in Class 4A – Sports Libre up to & Including 1700cc, Clive Wooster‘s Radical SR4 really didn’t like the soaked track and slithered unpredictably to a class win and fifth overall on 91.54 seconds.

ROUND 23 - Sunday 9th September 2018
SPRINT CIRCUIT

We arose to a much drier day on Sunday and from the off, the track was dry and no doubt a bit cleaner after recent testing.

Class SB – Standard Saloon & Sports Cars Over 1400cc up to 2000cc kicked the day off and once again Steve Riddle in the ClioCup took the win, this time on a 77.82 seconds.

Class 1A – Road Modified Saloons & Sports Cars up to 1400cc had the same two protagonists, but this time they literally couldn’t have been closer. Andrew Rollason in the Ford Ka beat Mike Edwards in the British Mini by 1/100ths of a second, recording 84.07 seconds to Mike’s 84.08 seconds!

In Class 1C – Road Modified Saloons & Sports Cars Over 2000cc, James Hunt joined the class after a Saturday at MIRA and took second place in the BMW on 73.79 seconds. Paul Jaggard in the Alfa was next on 80.40 seconds and Emma Hunt fourth on 84.57 seconds. Unfortunately, we lost Ed McDonough due to a suspension failure after Saturday’s event.

Class 2A – Road Going Kit, Replica & Spaceframed Cars up to 1700cc saw Anthony Shearman head the BARC group with second place on 75.64 seconds, followed by John Clarke on 76.28 seconds, Paul Webb on 76.89 seconds and Zoe Shearman on 78.59 seconds – times much tighter in the dry.

In Class 3B – Modified Production Cars Excluding Kit, Replica and Spaceframed Cars Over 1400cc up to & Including 2000cc, Elen Worthington‘s Elise triumphed once again, this time on 73.43 seconds for the class.

Class 3C – Modified Production Cars Excluding Kit, Replica and Spaceframed Cars Over 2000cc saw Mike Stark‘s Alfa a little happier in the dry, recording 78.46 seconds for the class. Early runs had seen Mike scattering all but one of the cones at the first corner, he was half hoping to go back for that last one to record a strike.

Finally, in Class 4A – Sports Libre up to & Including 1700cc, Clive Wooster‘s Radical SR4 was much – MUCH! – happier in the dry, recording 66.16 seconds for the class win and second overall.

So, there’s still all to play for as we head to Curborough Sprint Course for the penultimate round of the 2018 BARC Connaught Speed Championship on 29th September.
