ROUND 20 - Sunday 26th August 2018

There was a diminished contingent of BARC Connaught Speed Championship competitors at Harewood, compared to the bumper amount last time out a Curborough. Despite the weather being dreadful on Sunday, all our competitors managed to take their cars home in one piece. If only we had come a day earlier, the weather would have been glorious, with competitors able to get eight timed runs in.

The day started with hopes that the rain wouldn’t fall until midday. Alas, these thoughts were dashed part way through our first practice runs, as the rain started to fall and continued for the rest of the day.

Class 1A – Road Going Modified Saloon & Sports Cars up to & Including 1400cc had Andrew Rollason take the beautifully sounding Ford KA to a sixth in class securing 19.8 championship points in a time of 85.49 seconds. Not surprisingly, and causing some jealousy on this fellow competitor’s behalf, he packed up early and went home to avoid getting any wetter!

Class 1B – Road Going Modified Saloon & Sports Cars 1401cc up to & Including 2000cc saw the Martorana Brothers, Adriano and Leo, in close battle in a large and very close field of twenty-six (third place to seventh place were all within half a second of each other). Anyhow, the brothers made a very leisurely start to the morning, being the last competitors to sign on despite only living a mere fifteen minutes down the road! After the first timed run it was looking like a Leo whitewash, leading his brother by 3.76 seconds. But T2 saw Adriano take seventeenth place with 79.52 seconds, making use of the local knowledge to nudge into the lead and push Leo, who could only secure a 79.78 seconds, into twentieth place by a mere few tenths.

RESULTS – ROUND 20

Class 1C – Road Going Modified Saloon & Sports Cars Two Wheel Drive Over 2000cc had husband and wife arch enemies Jim and Emma Hunt battle it out throughout the day, being within one second of each other on each run. After struggling with some traction issues at the start taking almost 4.5 seconds to reach sixty four feet, Jim tried to pull back the lost seconds up the hill managing a T2 of 77.83 seconds, while Emma had to settle for her T1 time with 79.96 seconds after missing a gear on T2. This time was very respectable as it was only 3 seconds slower than her personal best time in the dry. In a field of fifteen competitors, together they managed to beat a Nissan 350Z, two Porsches and a Skoda Fabia VRS, Jim taking eighth place with Emma in ninth.

Class 3B – Modified Production Cars Excluding Kit, Replica and Spaceframed Cars 1401cc up to & including 2000cc saw the final two BARC Connaught Speed Championship competitors make their way up the hill. Taras Andrusin, after working solidly on repairing the Renault Clio after an unfortunate excursion at Loton Park, came back strongly with 78.53 seconds. However, our current Championship leader, Elen Worthington, courageously tried to uphold her 100% record of smashing target. Unfortunately, the weather put paid to this as Elen could only manage 74.16 seconds. She did however make full use of the day as an F1 style pit crew training day for Simon, seeing him change the tyres three or four times before P1, ensuring fitness levels are kept up to their peak until the end of the season.

A very well done to all the competitors that made the long journey to Harewood. Here’s to hoping that our racing boots dry out for a brighter day at Liverpool next weekend.
